[How to be a Good Consultant]

I am proud to still be working with some of the same clients I started out with over ten years ago. My clients call me back because I help them succeed.  Here's the recipe:

  1. Listen to the client. Understanding his problem and get a clear understanding of how he wants the solution delivered. Does he want a report, a piece of software, a hardware prototype, a training seminar...?

  2. Evaluate the problem carefully. If I can recommend a better resource, then refer the client to that resource.

  3. If the client has an engineering staff, then share my knowledge with them so THEY can solve the problem next time.

  4. Provide clear written documentation to the customer.

  5. Measure success by observing the client. If he takes my work and "runs with it", then I succeeded.
